Recent information has shown a small increase in the risk of a type of usually non-cancerous brain tumour called a meningioma in people using Depo-Provera and some types of the mini pill for a long time.
Meningiomas are uncommon, and the overall risk remains very low.
Symptoms can include:
Persistent or worsening headaches
Changes in vision
Hearing problems
Seizures (fits)
Weakness or numbness
People who currently have, or have previously had, a meningioma should not use these medicines and should speak to a healthcare professional about other contraception options.
If you are using Depo-Provera or the mini pill, please do not stop your contraception without medical advice. For most people, the benefits of effective contraception continue to outweigh the risks.
We are reviewing patients who use these medicines in line with current safety advice. You may be contacted and invited for a review. If you have any concerns or would like to discuss alternative contraception, please contact the practice.
